Consul General Encourages American Engagement with UAE

In a September 13 address to 200-plus members of the Dubai American Women’s Association at the Murooj Rotana Hotel in Dubai, Consul General Paul Sutphin said his first year in Dubai had been marked by a true appreciation of the extraordinary changes wrought in the city in a very short time, and the Emirate’s openness and forward-looking approach to development. Despite challenges, including assuring the rights of expatriate laborers, the overwhelming thrust of change was a positive one. The United States Government has been and will continue to have a positive and productive dialogue on these issues. Moreover, American business and American citizens continue to increase their presence in and engagement with the Emirate – all to a very positive effect.

The Consul General also underlined the important role played by individual Americans resident in the UAE as personal ambassadors. As the event coincided with the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan, he encouraged AWA members to make special efforts during the month to reach out to Emirati colleagues and neighbors, and to participate in Ramadan traditions including Iftar meals and visiting the majlis in Emirati homes.

Praising the Emirate of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates as a whole, Mr. Sutphin described the UAE as a place of positive energy for Americans, and a place where there was a strong and genuine desire for increased business, cultural and educational ties. Mr. Sutphin said Ramadan was an excellent opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of Emirati life and culture, and to help “the East to look West and the West to look East.”

Noting the recent anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, he said the United States’ ability to provide the best in international education and culture was an excellent tool to help move young people away from extremist thinking. He urged Americans in Dubai to be “proud, but modest”, and to look for ways to increase their contribution to Emirati life and society.
